1. Introduction
It is well-known that language is inseparable from culture. On the one hand, language is a part of culture and plays an important role in it. On the other hand, as a mirror of culture, language is strongly influenced by culture, meanwhile, it reflects culture. Sometimes the similar life experience and awareness of the two natives show the similar cultural characteristics by some idioms. However, this is just the small part of the numbers, the other great number of idioms show quite distinct language customs and cultural differences between the two countries due to four specific reasons.
To absorb more quintessence from foreign cultures, to best convey the authors’ styles and literal beauty of Chinese classical literatures overseas, the translation work seems to be of major importance. The following paper analyses the influence of cultural differences on Chinese and English idioms, and then studies to draw specific approaches to the problems of cultural integration in idiom translation.
2. English and Chinese Idioms
With a long history, variety of customs, and traditional culture, both Chinese and English become a kind of very extensive and profound language. To learn or translate English into the most authentic Chinese, or the other way round, we should know a very special form of language–Idioms.
2.1. Definition of idioms
Idioms are the special elements of the language. It is a kind of the rhetoric which often uses to modify the meaning or make a rainbow over the language. Specifically, they are the fixed word groups, phrases or clauses formed in the process of social and historical development, which makes the whole meaning of them is not just the simple combination of each word, but a certain metaphorical meaning definitely related to people’s living style, mode of thinking, religious or literary allusions in their own country. In the broad sense, idioms include metaphorical phrases, slangs, colloquialisms, proverbs, sayings, allusions, epigrams, enigmatic folk similes and so on.
We all know that China and England have shown great differences in their customs, histories and cultural backgrounds etc. These make idioms the most difficult part of English and Chinese Translation. Only we take the comprehensive knowledge raging from the origin of idioms to various translation methods into consideration, can we do a great job in translation work?
